Alberto Valença (1890 – 1983) preferred to paint in open air, depicting the effect of the light on landscapes, human beings, objects, monuments – an impressionist characteristic. When depicting the mystical interiors of the religious temples, it is visible the effect of the light from outdoors indoors. The portraits, generally of live models under natural light, can be compared to the ones by the Dutch painter Rebrandt, with a color effect chiaroscuro (dark and clear). In Valença’s works there are also examples of classic realism. It is hard to classify his works in a sole style.
Valença’s paintings and drawings are found in private and museum’s collections.
